This is another of my personal collection of museum quality paperweights. This shows a claret pompon, with four concentric rings of C-Shaped rods around a yellow, star, complex cane center. It is framed by two Type I pansies, each with shaded purple upper petals, and three cobalt blue and white arrowhead cane lower petals. A white double clematis blooms above the pompon, crowned by four, spaced, bright green leaves, as it shares a stem with a pair of small, furled, green leaves. The clematis and pansies each display similar pale yellow, red, and white star honeycomb/star cane centers. The design is finished with a small red bud and green leaves, sprouting from a green vine which wraps around the stem of the pompon. Clear ground.
Quoting "Paperweights: Flowers which Clothe The Meadows" - 'Nearly all examples of flat floral bouquets show paperweight making at its gayest and most exuberant, belying the Victorian reputation for the lugubrious.'
Quoting "Glass Paperweights In The Art Institute of Chicago" - 'In 1848, the introduction of lampwork added significantly to Baccarat's already versatile use of millefiori canes as decorative and identifying devices. Star and arrow canes center many flower types; the arrows were also sometimes used for lower pansy petals (as illustrated here) and for stylized arrangements.....'
Diameter: 3 1/4".

PRICE GUIDE: Spring 2006 Paperweight Price Guide
L. H. Selman, Ltd.
The Glass Gallery
Estimated $12,000.00 - 18,000.00 (plus the ten percent Buyer's Commission at the time. The Buyer's Commission rose to TWENTY percent last year!)
We are listing this rare and beautiful weight at only a bit over the high estimate, in spite of the fact that the Price Guide is eight years old. We feel a treasure such as this gives the owner enormous pride of ownership and a great deal of pleasure. The possibility of appreciation in value is a small consideration compared to your enjoyment of having this.
