Functional or Desk ornament paperweight. Early 1950's Chris Craft Bronze through hull fitting part number 3989 with nut 3991 stamped or cast . Rough Cast Bronze fitting, needs to be polished. Good Condition and Functional if you are restoring a wooden boat. This was used below the waterline, so was not meant to be seen. It was cast bronze, which has a more reddish tone and is less brittle than brass. The rounded part was outside the wooden hull, the 3 cast spikes pressed into the hull, the nut held it firmly into place. In the 20th century it was installed with sticky bedding compound. It has inside threads for a brass pipe, and would have been used for cooling water outlet or inlet or outlet for the engine. On a larger ship, or on a 19th century sailing ship, a similar fitting was used, and bedded with pitch or pine tar, for a pump to wash the deck or as a fire hose with a nozzle as I have on another ad. The nut moves easily by hand. This is a traditional fitting that changed little over the centuries, it was simply adapted to new uses. On vessels today, this would be made of stainless steel.
