This is a very nice hand-hammered solid copper ashtray done in the Arts and Crafts style of the Stickley era. It measures a maximum of 7 inches across and, including the matchbox holder, stands 3 inches tall. There is a monogram incised into it which we believe is the letter “G”. There is no signature on the piece, but there is a very small letter “G” that has been scratched into the underside. The condition is very nice with a rich dark copper patina extending across the top and bottom. There are several places where the patina has rubbed off showing the brighter copper surface. The dish part of the ashtray has some mottling which is a result of extinguishing cigarettes and cigars over the years. There are also several very tiny spots of blue-green oxidation.
Overall, this is a striking item, in very desirable condition, and having wonderful display presence. It would make a nice statement on your Stickley library table or desk. If you do not smoke, you could fill it with paperclips and rubber bands. Fill it with Tootsie-Rolls for your grandkids! No matter how you use it, you will not be disappointed.
