Flatbacks, a name given during the latter part of the 19th century due to the introduction of the business practice of saving the cost of decorating the rear of the figure. These pieces were aimed at the working-class masses, and designed to stand against a wall atop of fireplace or shelf.

This spill vase has a couple dressed in their fine clothing appropriate for the time. The vase is in good antique condition. The vase is not cracked, there is a small flake on the man’s hairline. It is hard to see but in transparency, it is there. The vase was recently acquired from an old estate in Central Pennsylvania. There is no maker’s mark. The flatback is 5½ inches long, 2 inches deep, and almost 8 inches tall. This a fine example of a flatback well over 100 years old. Enjoy!
