This is a very rare gentleman's fashion accessory, c1800-1810, which could have been worn with a frilled shirt, and would have been very appropriate for Mr Darcy! It is a stock/understock of aged white linen gently tapering at each end, with the ends attached to a tape for tying. There is one large slit, hand-stitched, to allow a tape and narrower section to be passed through so it can be adjusted and tied at the back (see images). It is in very good condition for age. Survivors of this fashion accessory are extremely rare and this is therefore an important addition to an age-correct display of an outfit from this era. Please note that this lovely item has been in storage, so once shipped it may still retain a whiff of mothballs.
3 ins (8cm) depth x 23 ins (59cm) length. Weight 14 grams.
