This antique thin bronze religious medal carries an image of Carolus Magnus on once side. He is depicted in full regalia and holding a scepter in one hand and a symbolic town or perhaps the Cathedral of Aachen in the other. Carolus Magnus is also known as Charlemagne, Charles the Great, Charles I, and Holy Roman Emperor.
The back reads “Dies Ist Das Heiligthum Von Aachen” (this is the is the sanctuary of Aachen) around a cross with relics. Aachen, a city in Germany, was Charlemagne’s center of power.
Likely, this was a pilgrimage souvenir.
