This rare and most beautiful English sterling mirror compact is hallmarked for 1891 It might originally have been intended to hang on a chatelaine belt . It could now been worn as a pendant.
The is piece is large , measuring 3 and 1/16” (7.8cms), excluding the bail, by 1 and 5/8” (4.2cms) across. It weighs a very substantial 32.9 grams.
The rectangular sides are lavishly embossed with flowers and leaves in the repoussé style. They have a corded edge.
There are English hallmarks on both sides. There is a maker’s mark .’TO’ or ‘TD’. There follow the lion passant for sterling silver, the leopard’s head for the London assay office and finally the date letter ‘1891’.
There is a large bail at the top and a ring.
At the base there is a hook and ball closure. The closure is a bit firm but better this than loose.
It slides to one side to reveal an intact bevelled mirror. It is protected on the opposite side by red fabric.
In excellent, antique condition, this gorgeous piece will arrive in a gift box.
